What is a Vascular Surgeon?

Vascular surgeons ensure the normal and healthy condition of a patient’s cardiovascular system, which includes the blood vessels and heart. They specialize in diagnosing, evaluating, and preventing serious complications of cardiovascular diseases in order to promote the patient’s well-being and quality of life.

These medical professionals have expertise in the treatment of various disorders, including the following:

Watch how the Endovascular Graft is deployed for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm

1. Aneurysms

The arterial vessels and other arteries tend to weaken and burst when left untreated. An aneurysm results from the widening of the artery by more than one and a half times its normal size. In particular, the aorta is susceptible to this condition because of its primary role in receiving blood from the heart through the other arteries.

2. Carotid artery stenosis

The arteries located in the neck are prone to narrowing due to fat deposits (atheroma) in the interior lining of the artery wall. Atheroma causes the narrowing and reduction of blood flow, which may lead to the formation of blood clots in the carotid arteries.

3. Visceral artery disease

The different organs of the abdomen consist of numerous arteries that may narrow and malfunction due to unhealthy lifestyle and diet. When this condition occurs, a patient may require the appropriate medical intervention.

4. Peripheral vascular disease

Vascular disorders may occur in the limbs and arteries that lead to the feet and legs. Some patients do not experience symptoms, while others may suffer from difficulty in walking. Serious cases of this disease usually require vein surgery or amputation of a portion of the limb.

5. Deep venous thrombosis (DVT)

This disorder affects the veins in the thigh and lower leg, and the pain may worsen due to injury or prolonged inactivity. While some cases of DVT may not have symptoms, this condition may be evident with swelling and pain in the legs.

6. Leg ulcers

Undiagnosed or untreated DVT may lead to leg ulcers. The healing process may be prolonged by various conditions including skin infection, trauma, and poor blood circulation in the arteries.
