Nutrition after LAP BAND® surgery

Home » Nutrition after LAP BAND® surgery

Immediately post-op for up to approximately one week:

Sips of water or a few ice cubes immediately post-op.

Sips of water or clear liquids with some calories post-op. Drinking too much at one time will cause nausea.

1-2 Weeks post-op:

Thin liquids only to protect the small stomach pouch. These include clear broth soup (no vegetables, meat or cream), skim or soy milk, no sugar added popsicles, fat-free plain yogurt or low fat cottage cheese, Optifast or other pproved meal replacement shakes. 3-4 weeks post-op:

Pureed foods – this means a consistency similar to baby foods.

Include good sources of protein first, then add fruits and vegetables.

Nutrition after LAP BAND® surgery5-weeks post-op:

Soft foods – tender cooked meats, moist meats (choose lean meats to limit saturated fat such as white meat chicken, turkey breast and fish), soft poached eggs, scrambled eggs, or egg substitute, or Silken tofu. It is very important to chew your meats very well to avoid obstruction.

1-2oz of meat, fish, poultry or one egg each DAY. Use low fat methods of cooking and remove all the visible fat from the meats.

1-2 servings of fresh fruit daily. A serving of fruit = ½ banana, 1 small (3oz) apple, ¾-1 cup berries. 2-3 servings of fresh vegetables daily. A serving of vegetables = ½ cup cooked vegetables (excludes beans, peas, corn and potatoes).

1 small portion (less than 1 cup) low sugar hot or cold cereal OR ½ to 1 slice toasted whole wheat bread.

Maximum 2 cups (16oz) skim milk or low fat yogurt and 1 oz low fat cheese.

Use fats (butter, margarine, mayo, dressing) in extreme moderation. Maximum 3-4 teaspoons daily.

Drink only non-calorie containing beverages. Avoid carbonation.
