Fellowship Trained Surgical OncologistDr. Cox was born and raised in Houston, Texas. He received his BS degree in Microbiology from Texas A&M University and his MD from The University of Texas at Houston Medical School. He began his general surgery training at the Charles Drew University/Dr. MLK Jr. Los Angeles County Hospital in Los Angeles, California. He then embarked on completing clinical and research fellowships at the National Cancer Institute/National Institutes of Health in Immunotherapy and Surgical Oncology. He finished his residency training in General Surgery at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC.
Dr. Cox recently completed his surgical oncology fellowship at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, NY. His interests include upper gastrointestinal/hepatobiliary malignancies, breast/endocrine and soft tissue malignancies such as sarcoma and melanoma. In addition, he has a keen enthusiasm in studying the outcomes of cancer health disparities (CHD). He is focused on researching and examining 1) the factors that contribute to their existence, 2) the populations being disproportionately affected, and 3) implementing interventions designed to reduce/eliminate CHD. He was recently awarded the Cancer Health Disparities Fellowship/Externship, co-sponsored by the American Cancer Society and the Society of Surgical Oncology.
Dr. Cox will begin private practice with Bay Surgical Specialists, PA on August 29, 2011 and is accepting new patients. He resides in St. Petersburg with his wife.
